Undocumented Students One Step Closer to American DREAM

Thursday, August 30, 2012

Undocumented APIA students make up an estimated 10% of DREAMers nationwide, and 45% of those in the University of California school system. Despite community stigma and a general lack of visibility, APIA DREAMers have steadily come out as “undocumented and unafraid” to share their stories, organize protests, and help build a multiethnic immigrant rights movement. Their courage and leadership has paid off: as of August 15th 2012, an estimated 1.7 million undocumented students became eligible to apply for work permits and temporary relief from deportation under President Obama’s announcement of deferred action. However, due to considerable paperwork and costs ($465!) many individuals will be seeking legal and financial assistance. Stay up to date on guidelines, workshops,  and legal help in your area, and take an online screening here. The Asian American Center for Advancing Justice has also established free legal assistance hotlines in Asian languages.
