Summary

18MR is looking for a talented, experienced Social Media Manager to lead our social media accounts and support in our campaigns and projects to organize progressive and radical Asian Americans across the U.S.

This role will be responsible for managing social media channels, strategic growth, and building relationships with 18MR members and followers. As Social Media Manager you will manage posts across multiple channels, create and manage a monthly social media content strategy and calendar that reflects the purpose and goals for each social platform. As Social Media Manager, you are up-to-date with the latest digital technologies and social media trends. You are able to curate multi-faceted content designed to showcase the diversity of Asian America, our contributions and struggles as a community, and opportunities for activism and organizing.

A Social Media Manager is more than a communications specialist. They spend their time figuring out how to leverage online tools to their fullest extent: to bring those already a part of the community further on their path to growth while inviting new members to ask questions and become part of the progressive Asian American movement. They understand that social media is one tool of many, and it’s also a connective tissue that links the different parts of 18MR’s work together.

A strong candidate for this position may have experience in digital community management, social media and strategic communications, digital organizing, and copywriting. The Social Media Manager will report to the Director of Design and Product.

Responsibilities

Platform Maintenance

  • Day to day management of 18MR’s affiliated social media feeds (Instagram, Twitter, Facebook, Tumblr, YouTube and potential new accounts such as TikTok) with up-to-date news, analysis, and campaign calls-to-action.
  • Grow social communities through active posting and engagement across social channels.
  • Ensure social platforms and communication campaigns align with 18MR’s brand guidelines.
  • Develop and manage digital ads for campaigns and project promotions.
  • Track the news cycle for hot political and cultural topics that are capturing the attention of 18MR members and integrate trending topics of the day into social media.
  • Regular evaluation of 18MR’s social channels, trends, and the larger social media landscape.

Communication Strategy

  • In collaboration with the team, create and manage a monthly social media content strategy and calendar that reflects the purpose and goals for each social platform.
  • Gather and report on monthly insights about channel/community performance, highlighting top-performing content, low performing content, and opportunities for growth. Develop, track, and analyze metrics of success for social media activities.
  • Ability to develop analysis of existing and emerging social media tools and platforms, in order to make recommendations that will shape long-term strategy.
  • Collaborate with 18MR’s team to integrate social media within wider campaigns and programs and act as an advisor on how best to leverage different types of content on 18MR’s social media channels.
  • Continuously build out a list of potential partners and make recommendations to the team for collaborations, partner outreach, and partner engagements.
  • Participate as an occasional public representative for 18MR and support requests from press, contribute to public statements, and media tracking.

Content

  • Translate and implement content strategies for social media platforms in alignment with organizational and strategic goals.
  • Collaborate with Organizing Team and Design Team in ideation of creative, engaging, and radical content for social media and other digital channels as needed.
  • Collaborate with the Design Team to collect assets for content library.
  • Write, edit, and optimize social posts to effectively engage and organize our base.
  • Develop and manage an organizational tone of voice that is friendly and empowering.
  • Coordinate with the Design Team to produce content, graphics, and toolkits.
  • Collaborate with the Digital Organizer to develop social media toolkits to distribute to community partners and our members to amplify programs.

Required Skills and Work Experience

  • At least three to five years experience working in social movements or organizing, either as a paid staff person or volunteer working on digital campaigns or online organizing.
  • Exceptional written and verbal communication, including public speaking.
  • Experience using a social media content scheduler and management tools such as Hootsuite, Later, Tweetdeck, Buffer, UNUM Cloud, Sprout Social, etc.
  • Self-directed worker who enjoys collaborating in teams. Ability to adapt to changing conditions with graciousness and good humor.
  • Familiarity using digital technologies to meet the goals of social media campaigns, political education, and programs.
  • Strategic and forward thinking, sees big picture trends and is able to anticipate changes and suggest pivots.
  • Confidence working with a diverse team and the capacity to approach conflict with both compassion and firmness.
  • Superior time management and organizational skills and ability to juggle multiple projects and meet deadlines in a high-energy, fast-paced environment.
  • Strong intersectional and internationalist analysis and ability to articulate connection between concepts and principles and current events.

Nice-to-Have Skills and Work Experience

  • A strong sense of design and aesthetics.
  • Graphic design, motion graphic, or video editing skills. Fluency in design programs such as Photoshop or After Effects.
  • Familiarity with working on a remote team and building relationships with teammates and external partners in a virtual setting.
  • Fluency in one or more Asian (including East, Southeast, and South Asian) languages.
  • An understanding of Asian American movements historically and in the current moment.
  • An understanding of how different ethnic, language, and racial sub-segments of the Asian American community use different digital tools.
  • Familiarity with abolitionist frameworks.

Salary and Benefits

This is a full-time, salaried, exempt position. The 18MR team works a four-day work week, although hours can be flexible based on the demands of current events and the campaign cycle. The salary range for this position is between $65,000 and $75,000 annually, commensurate with experience and your local cost of living. 18MR offers cost-of-living and merit raises at the beginning of every calendar year.

As we are a distributed team, your primary residence may be located anywhere in the United States. 18MR’s current staff are based in Washington, D.C., Los Angeles, and the San Francisco Bay Area. Occasional organization-sponsored travel for conferences and face-to-face staff gatherings will be required.
