Using technology and popular culture, we develop new ways for Asian Americans and our allies to collaborate, create new ways of being, and transform the world around us. We utilize digital-first advocacy tactics to elevate the voices of and mobilize our over 175,000 members to take action on issues that matter to them. We create meeting places online where young Asian Americans can deliberate together about what it means to be Asian American in the 21st century. Organizing Director Summary

The role of the Organizing Director is integral to the success of our national organizing and movement building for 18MR. They will lead 18MR’s Organizing team in our campaigns, programs, and special projects to ensure that we continue to build trust, collaboration, and deep movement building with our organizational partners, networks, and members.

From leading the direction and design of 18MR’s online mobilization and organizing to strategic communications and content strategy, the Organizing Director will ensure that we are contributing to the larger movement in building power over the internet. They will lead the organization’s campaign and programmatic work and oversee the implementation of our tactical plan each year.

Our 18MR campaigns take on a range of issues facing Asian American communities and other communities of color, focused on racial, economic, and gender justice. We work in intentional, sustained partnership with our partner organizations as well as artists and creatives, and pride ourselves on moving in ways that foster trust, interdisciplinary collaboration, and deep movement building. To that end, candidates may have skills not just in digital campaigning, but in other forms of online mobilization and relational organizing; strategic communications; and content strategy.

A strong candidate for this position will have a proven track record of success leading campaigns or organizing efforts and using the internet to win on social justice issues. They are humble, self-reflective, and adaptable. They understand the value of balancing realism and idealism when developing compelling theories of change and calls to action, and have the tenacity to stick with a fight to win.

The Organizing Director will report to the Executive Director of 18MR.

Responsibilities

Prospect, develop, and lead new campaigns and programs that advance the vision and mission of 18MR, focused on building partnerships and a deeply engaged membership.
Supervise and coach 18MR’s Organizing Team, including the Community Engagement Manager and Digital Organizer to thrive and lead in their areas of work and grow their skills to increase the quality of their work.
Co-leads team retreats, assessments, and programming with the Leadership Team.
Collaborate with senior leadership to develop strategy, lead and hold the big picture for campaign, basebuiding and leadership development, online organizing, and political education and action strategies, making sure they are building power for systemic change.
Identify gaps and areas of our growth in our national organizing strategy and support the team to address them.
Collaborates with the development team on grassroots fundraising and building a culture of fundraising throughout the organization.
Track and raise external rapid response opportunities, coordinate with the team to create cohesive and sometimes quickly changing plans across our strategies and connect to our annual goals as much as possible.
Work closely with other 18MR Directors to assess and map out cross-strategy movement coalitions, landscapes and partners to support defining 18MR’s role in multi-class, multi-racial organizing for racial and economic justice.
Identify and build key external relationships with cross-strategy partners as it supports our work and our goals, and where we have unique “added value” to larger systemic efforts across political education, grassroots power building, and issue campaigns.

Required Skills and Work Experience

At least 5 years of community organizing and campaigns work experience
Experience designing community-based non-profit programs and/or online campaigns
Experience aligning a team around goals, giving feedback, building skills and leadership, and supporting overall team work planning and prioritization
Project management skills with a remote team
Desire to do transformative organizing and has a demonstrated commitment to racial and economic justice. Believes in the stake Asian Americans have in collective liberation, and the possibility and necessity of cross-class and multiracial movement building
An understanding of Asian American social movements historically and in the current moment
An understanding of digital organizing landscape
Familiarity with online platforms and interest in emerging digital communities
Excellent written and oral communication; possess strong writing, detail editing, and proofreading skills
Demonstrated organizational and managerial skills and ability to balance priorities and meet deadlines promptly in a fast-paced office

Nice-to-Have Skills and Work Experience

At least 3-5 years of staff supervision experience
Experience with national and local digital organizing using the Internet and platforms
Fluency with popular culture and internet culture; an understanding of how these cultures impact organizing
Media training and confidence with public speaking to news media and 18MR audience.
Experience coaching staff in leadership development
Experience working with artists and creatives to co-creating content strategies
Working knowledge of member database tools, how to construct custom queries, and leverage data for decision making.
Experience with 1-3 digital organizing tools (Twilio, Mobilize, Umbrella, Hustle, Organizing for Action, CallHub, Action Kit, Every Action, NationBuilder, Action Network, etc).

Salary and Benefits

This is a full-time, salaried, exempt position. The 18MR team works a four day work week. The salary range for this position is between $85,000 and $95,000 annually, commensurate with experience and your local cost of living. 18MR offers cost-of-living and merit raises at the beginning of every calendar year.

As we are a distributed team, your primary residence may be located anywhere in the United States. 18MR’s current staff are based in Washington, D.C., Los Angeles, and the San Francisco Bay Area. Occasional organization-sponsored travel for conferences and face-to-face staff gatherings will be required.
