Thank you so much for attending our first Virtual Art Build! We heard about the incredible Chicago-based organizing work from artist-organizer Cori Nakamura Lin and Tiffany Wong along with how they see art in organizing.
Together, we gathered in a virtual community to create art that would tap into the emotions of our community to further mobilize them towards action. From memes to graphics to protest signs, we are making sure our government knows our demands – whether they like it or not.
- Link to the recording and here are the slides. The slides has all of our CTA links.
- That was the first time we’ve done an event like this. Let us know what you think and if you’d like to see more!
- If you’re interested in being more involved with 18MR, fill out this Membership Interest Form.
And don’t forget to take 5 minutes to take action:
- Sign a letter to Senator Dick Durbin to reject PERA and pass the Philippines humans rights act.
- Visit the Action Toolkit to learn more ways to take action.
- Get involved with local mutual aid groups. Here’s a list of Chicago-based ones.
- Sign up for Tiffany’s Liberatory Imagination Virtual Workshop on September 5th.
Thank you for joining us. Here’s to our continued resistance.
In solidarity,
Brenda, Leyen, Turner, Kari, Allison, Sharmin, and Irma – the 18MR Team
We will gather online to create art, writings, memes, (anything creative!). meet fellow cultural workers, get inspired and learn how art and culture is part of organizing with chicago artists Cori Nakamura Lin, tiffany wong, and the 18mr staff!
Meet Chicago-based artist/organizers Cori Nakamura Lin and Tiffany Wong as they share how art can mobilize organizing and how contributing to the movement can come in many forms.
We’ll break out into three rooms:
- With Cori and 18MR’s Digital Organizer, Leyen, folks can learn about Midwest organizing, and how art making is part of organizing.
2. With Tiffany, folks can process their emotions of this political climate through writing or any other physical materials. Tiffany will offer a tutorial on how to make a protest sign.
3. With our Comms Designer, Brenda and Community Engagement Manager, Turner, understand how to use Internet culture in art and movement work. You can make memes with our Meme Guide or use our Canva template or .pngs to create a poster or graphics for an action.
There will be guides and tutorials to support artists of all levels. You do not need to finish your art during the art build. Just join us and have some fun!
Cori and Tiffany will also talk about what’s happening on the ground in Chicago. The Democratic National Convention will be in Chicago and is during the week of August 19, where presumed-Presidential candidate Kamala Harris accepts her nomination. As people of conscious, working class, people of color across a spectrum of genders, we’re gathering to demand an end to the genocide of the Palestinian people, reparations for Black and brown people, and end to U.S. military intervention and aid across the globe. Here’s the full list of the March on DNC Demands.
18MR will also have a submission art form for folks to drop off their art! Those who consent to our submission form will be reviewed to have their art reposted or shared on our instagram! Whether you consider yourself an artist or not, find movement and community online with 18MR.
